Tepito

After watching Pitch Perfect last week (which I loooooved btw!!), my friend and I decided that we were in the mood for some margaritas.  The East Village has some excellent choices for tacos so we stopped by Tepito for some taco and margarita goodies.

Tepito (ignore the scaffolding...)
Inside, it's a colorful blue and red themed space with wood tables and chairs.  The first room you walk into has high bar style tables and the second room on the side offers the traditional tables.

First order of business: scope out the margarita options!  Dining compadre decided on the Mexican Mojito (with muddled pineapple, tequila, mint, and fresh lime juice) and I couldn't resist the call of the Clasica Agave margarita (with tequila, fresh lime juice, and agave nectar).  The drinks were nicely presented and actually pretty large in size!  They tasted pretty good, but sadly were not very strong (was there any tequila??).

For our entrees, we stuck with our guns and went with tacos!  We ordered the Mahi Mahi tacos and the Carne Asada Tacos, splitting both.  Each order came with two tacos and rice and beans.  Sadly, I was unimpressed with the tacos.

The Mahi Mahi tacos came with chipotle glazed bacon, shredded lettuce, pico de gallo and honey-habanero aioli.  While I enjoyed the bacon and the honey habanero aioli, dining compadre thought these were a touch too salty.

The Carne Asada tacos came with caramelized onions, pickled cucumbers, queso fresco and roasted tomatillo salsa.  This was a huge disappointment as the beef was tough and flavorless.

Both tacos came on homemade tortillas.  While I appreciate the effort, these tortillas were way too thick and totally made the tacos unenjoyable (this coming from a girl who loves all carbs!).

Overall, the drinks were weak and the tacos were a huge disappointment - I can't get over how the unappetizingly thick tortillas really just took all the joy out of my taco eating poo.  I wanted to love you Tepito, but I don't think I'll be back...

  5. Tepito has long been known as a place that traded in stolen goods. And in the 1970s, the trade in counterfeit goods and illegally imported products known as fayuca began. Sellers would cross the border to the US, buy or simply obtain, almost impossibly hard to get items and sell them in Tepito.
