Rye

Hello Fellow Piggys!  It's been a while hasn't it?  So much has happened since I last posted, but the biggest of all is that it's now 2013!  Happy New Year!

I took some time to reflect on my 2012 and it was definitely quite a year for me:
- there was a break-up, a make-up, and a break-up again
- a best friend moved away, a best friend moved back
- I took plane rides to Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan, Las Vegas, Arkansas, Los Angeles and San Diego
- Sandy reminded us of our vulnerability
- I parted ways with my crackberry and finally got a fully functional smartphone (luuuuurv my S3!)
- and most importantly, I realized I almost let go of a dream

That realization was a hard one for me to swallow.  And so I didn't swallow it.  I decided to pursue it and here we are folks - its happening!  I know I'm being vague, but I will have explanations later.  For now, I'm only looking forward to what 2013 will be.  And what better way to kick it off on this blog than with a post!

Rye in Williamsburg.  This restaurant has been on Piggy KL's and my list for a while now and we finally had the chance to scope it out!  A quick ride on the L train and a dark yet brisk walk from the Bedford station transported us to the Rye dining room.

We arrived around 6:30pm on a weekday and there were plenty of tables available, but by the time we left around 8pm it was definitely a scene!  They don't take reservations, but I believe you can call ahead and put your name down on the wait list on busy nights.

The menu was a simple one but it still offered something for everyone:

But first order of business - a cocktail!  There's nothing I love more than an original cocktail menu.  Something about the Jack Rose cocktail was calling my name and Piggy KL wanted to give the Southside a try.  Southside was light and refreshing, but the Jack Rose was excellent!  I'll take another!

Going to have to mention the shoddy service here.  The waiters and runners were nice, but it took a long time to get our cocktails or any attention to request extra plates/silverware etc.  That was definitely frustrating and put a bit of a damper on our meal poo.  So just be ready for the slow service!

OK back the food!  To start, we just HAD to have the Scotch Egg and the Cauliflower Gratin.  The Scotch Egg (a hard boiled egg covered in sausage and fried crispy) was served on fresh strips of bacon and topped with this white ranch tasting sauce.  While the texture wasn't what I expected (rubbery??) it tasted so amazing!  Can you really resist bacon, crispy sausage, and egg all in one bite?  It's a party in my mouth!

The Cauliflower Gratin was also excellent and topped with a crispy crust.  Def order if you need a "veggie" hehe...

For our mains, I ordered the Center Cut Short Ribs and Piggy KL tried the Roasted Long Island Duck Breast.  My plate of Short Ribs was HUGE and came with an extremely generous.  I loved that it came with all the fixin's including mashed potatoes, swiss chard, and beets (did I tell you I'm on a beet kick these days??).  Someone had to roll me out of this joint after I polished this dish off.

Piggy KL also enjoyed the duck.  Perfectly prepared, moist, and fall off the bone tender, the duck will not leave you disappointed.

And of course, to close out our meal, Piggy KL went with our usual choice of the Creme Brulee.  This staple dessert was actually amazingly well prepared.  The top was nice and crispy with the inside so creamy deliciousness.  A must must must order!

Overall, other than the spotty service, I really enjoyed my meal at Rye.  Everything we ordered was solidly prepared and the portions generous.  If you're looking to explore a little more of Williamsburg, keep Rye at the top of your list!
